A compact four-slot toast rack in silver, arranged over a low rectangular base with neat ball feet and a loop handle rising from the centre. The little arches are evenly spaced and give the piece a clean, restrained look that sits easily with both period and modern table settings. Probably Edwardian in manner, c. 1906. The silver remains bright and the frame is straight, the construction simple and practical. There are full English, Birmingham and 1906 stamped marks to one end and Mappin and Webb on the other. The rack is light and handily sized for narrow trays or to hold a few slices of toast or small folded napkins. A useful small table accessory for a cottage or city kitchen, or for anyone who likes period tableware on a compact scale or a collector of Mappin and Webb silver.
