Freestanding wooden letter S, pale cream painted finish with distressed surface and a black-backed reverse. Bare size c. 33 x 24 x 3 cm, weight about 900 g.

A large wooden letter S, cut in a rounded serif style and finished in a pale cream paint. It appears to be solid timber and probably dates to the mid 20th century, with a black-painted reverse. The front surface has a worn, brush-textured paint with scattered chips and small knocks that reveal the wood beneath. There is a small area of loss to the outer curve where the paint and a little wood are missing, and the reverse shows surface scuffs and edge wear consistent with display use. A bold decorative initial for a shopfront, a mantel or a bookcase, it will sit freestanding or could be adapted for wall display by adding fixings.
